This remarkably well preserved mantle brings us clearly into the field of abstract or Colour-Field art. We should not discard the possibility that this stunning striped abstract design was not merely the creation of people whose sharp eye, intuitive sense of colour and composition, and uncompromising originality, rather, it was also an aesthetic solution for these ancient Huari female creators which happens to coincide with our own criteria of beauty in the twentieth century as explored by Paul Klee, Josef Albers, Kenneth Noland and Gerhard Richter,

This mantle is displayed opened up to reveal both sides as it would have appeared to the female artist weaving it on their loom. It bears a bold striped colour field composition, one of the many geometric forms that became predominant in the Huari to Inca periods. Here the polychromatic stripes create a large-scale almost optical structure. The ancient Andean artists endlessly exploited the multiple possibilities of strips, squares and rectangles.

Our own primordial instinct today leads us to resonate with this refined examples of "colour field" Andean textiles. These functional works of art reminds us that our Andean ancestors had already reached that point in distant times.

"My book about the weaving department at the Bauhaus is one of my most prized possessions, I learned about Anni Albers and the other talented women there, but I also learned that they were discriminated against and that reality really left a mark on me. Challenging the craft/art spectrum is a worthwhile endeavour – and hopefully my work helps to shift how people think about weaving" Brent Wadden
