Although it measures less than 2 metres wide, this work manages to achieve a remarkable sense of dynamism within a relatively compact space, owing to the wavy weaving lines and contrasting use of subtle colour. Related examples are to be found in the Josef and Anni Albers collection; Brice Marden was an avid admirer, as is Sean Scully. The piece also brings to mind the Colour Field painter Morris Louis’s early works from the 1960s.
