The art from Mezcala is known for the abstraction of its figures that are precolumbian echoes of cycladic art. Henry Moore was an avid collector of Mezcala pieces and he said that "nothing surpasses the art of sculpture of ancient Guerrero". In contrast to the multitude of figures there are very few masks. Furthermore there are even fewer large scale masks like this one. This piece is undoubtedly a masterpiece within the Mezcala tradition due to its exceptional qualities, including its size, beautiful and rare speckled diorite stone, the sensuality of its mirror-like polishing and its striking modernity.
